What is a Wishing Well?

A wishing well is an Australian tradition where guests contribute monetary gifts instead of physical presents at celebrations such as weddings, birthdays, baby showers, and engagements. The name comes from the ancient custom of tossing coins into natural wells to make wishes and receive blessings. In modern Australia, a wishing well uses either a decorated box at the venue (traditional) or a free online platform guests contribute to via link or QR code from anywhere in the world (digital).

What is a Wedding Wishing Well?

A wedding wishing well is a gifting tradition at Australian wedding receptions where guests contribute cash or digital monetary gifts to the couple instead of buying physical presents. Over 75% of Australian couples now prefer a wishing well over a traditional gift registry — it gives couples money toward goals that matter: a honeymoon, house deposit, or home furnishings.

Traditional wedding wishing wells use a decorated box or chest at the reception venue. Digital wedding wishing wells (like PocketWell) use a free online platform the couple shares via link or QR code, allowing interstate and overseas guests to contribute securely. Etiquette & Wording

Wishing Well Etiquette & Wording in Australia

How to ask for a wishing well politely — and ready-to-use wording examples for every occasion.

Wishing Well Etiquette: The Rules

  • ✓ Include wishing well wording on your details card, wedding website, or RSVP form — not the main invitation
  • ✓ Word it as optional and gracious — guests should never feel obligated
  • ✓ It's fine to pass the message via family or your bridal party
  • Never include gift requests on the main wedding invitation — this is considered poor etiquette in Australia
  • ✗ Avoid specifying a minimum amount

Wedding Wishing Well Wording Examples

Formal:

✓ “Your presence at our wedding is the greatest gift of all. Should you wish to bless us with a gift, a wishing well will be available on the day.

✓ “We have been living together for some time and have everything we need. In lieu of traditional gifts, a wishing well will be available for those who wish to contribute.

Casual / Funny:

✓ “We don't need another toaster! But we'd love help funding our honeymoon cocktails — a wishing well will be available.

✓ “Your presence > presents. But if you're feeling generous, our wishing well accepts contributions (and good marriage advice).

✓ “We promise not to spend it all on [destination]. Wishing well donations gratefully accepted!

Honeymoon Fund:

✓ “We're saving for our dream honeymoon in [destination]. If you'd like to help make our adventure special, a contribution to our travel fund would mean the world.

✓ “Instead of a traditional registry, we've set up a honeymoon wishing well to help us explore [region] together.

Baby Shower Wishing Well Wording

✓ “Your love and support mean everything as we prepare for our little one. A wishing well will help us with baby essentials if you wish to contribute.”

✓ “We have the big items covered — contributions toward nappies, formula, and baby necessities would be wonderful.”

✓ “Please, no gifts necessary — your presence is enough! For those who insist, a wishing well will be available for baby expenses.”

Birthday Wishing Well Wording

✓ “No presents please — just your company! If you insist, I'm saving for [goal] and a wishing well will be available.”

✓ “Turning [age] means I have everything I need! Contributions toward [trip/charity] would be deeply appreciated.”

✓ “At [age], I'm grateful for experiences over things. If you wish to contribute, help me fund my next adventure!”

Wishing Wells

Common questions about wishing wells in Australia

What is a wishing well?
A wishing well is an Australian tradition where guests contribute monetary gifts instead of physical presents at celebrations like weddings, birthdays, and baby showers. Guests either place cash in an envelope into a decorated box at the venue (traditional), or contribute online via a link or QR code from anywhere in the world (digital). The host receives the money directly into their bank account.
What is a wedding wishing well in Australia?
A wedding wishing well in Australia is a gifting tradition where guests contribute cash or digital monetary gifts to the couple instead of buying physical presents. Over 75% of Australian couples now prefer a wishing well over a traditional gift registry, as it lets them receive money toward a honeymoon, house deposit, or home essentials. Traditional wishing wells use a decorated box at the reception; digital wishing wells (like PocketWell) use a free online platform guests can contribute to from anywhere.
How does a wishing well work at a wedding?
At a traditional wedding wishing well, a decorated box is placed at the reception. Guests bring cash or a cheque in an envelope and drop it into the slot. With a digital wishing well, the couple shares a link or QR code — guests click it, choose an amount, and pay by card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay from anywhere. The couple receives the funds directly to their bank account, with an automatic record of every contribution.
Do you put a card in a wishing well at a wedding?
Yes — for a traditional wishing well, guests typically bring a card or envelope with cash or a cheque inside and place the whole thing into the wishing well box. The envelope lets the couple know who gave what. With a digital wishing well, guests add a personal message when they contribute online, so no physical card or envelope is needed.
What is a honeymoon wishing well?
A honeymoon wishing well (also called a honeymoon fund) is a wishing well where guests contribute money specifically toward the couple's honeymoon travel, accommodation, or experiences. Couples often describe exactly what the money will go toward — flights, a dinner, a beach night — making each contribution feel personal and meaningful. Digital honeymoon funds let guests anywhere in the world contribute securely online before, during, or after the wedding.
How much should you give at a wishing well in Australia?
Australian averages for 2026: close family $200–500, extended family $100–200, friends $100–150, work colleagues $50–100. For birthday wishing wells: milestone birthdays (21st, 30th, 50th) $50–150, regular birthdays $30–80. For baby shower wishing wells: close family $100–200, friends $50–100, coworkers $30–50. These are guidelines only — give what feels right for your relationship and budget.
Is it rude to ask for a wishing well instead of gifts?
No — in Australia, requesting a wishing well is widely accepted etiquette at weddings and milestone celebrations. The key is polite wording: never mention it on the main invitation; include it on a details card, your wedding website, or pass the message through family and your bridal party. Phrases like 'Your presence is the greatest gift; if you wish to contribute, a wishing well will be available' are perfectly appropriate.
Where can I buy a wishing well box in Australia?
Wishing well boxes are available at Kmart ($25–50), Target ($30–60), Spotlight ($40–80), and Bunnings (wooden crates $20–40 — great for DIY). For personalised options, Etsy Australia has handmade wishing wells for $80–150. Second-hand options on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree cost $15–50. Wedding rental companies in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane offer premium boxes for $50–100 per day.
How do I make a DIY wishing well box?
Choose a container (cardboard box, vintage suitcase, wooden crate from Bunnings, or a basket from Kmart). Cut a slot 5–10 cm wide in the top. Decorate with wrapping paper, fabric, ribbon, or flowers. Add a sign saying 'Wishing Well' or 'Cards & Wishes'. Reinforce the slot edges with tape. A DIY wishing well box costs $10–80 depending on materials. Assign a trusted person to watch it at your event.
What do you write on a birthday wishing well?
For a birthday wishing well, use wording on your invitation details card or event page such as: 'No gifts please — your company is all we need! If you'd like to contribute, a wishing well will be available' or 'Instead of presents, [Name] would love contributions toward [goal]. A wishing well will be set up on the day.' Keep it warm, optional, and never on the main invitation.
What is the difference between a wishing well and a gift registry?
A gift registry lists specific physical items guests can buy (e.g. a toaster or bedding set). A wishing well requests monetary gifts — cash in a box at the venue, or digitally via an online platform. Wishing wells are more flexible: guests choose their own amount, couples receive cash toward any goal, and there are no duplicate gifts or unwanted items. Most modern Australian couples now prefer a wishing well over a traditional gift registry.
Are traditional wishing well boxes safe?
Traditional wishing well boxes carry real security risks — cash envelopes can be lost, stolen, or misplaced at busy receptions. Best practices: assign a trusted person to monitor the box all evening, use a lockable box, collect envelopes periodically and store securely, and never leave the box unattended overnight. A digital wishing well eliminates all these risks — funds are processed securely by Stripe and transferred to your bank account weekly.
